10 Tips for Moving Out of State

Choosing to move from one state to another can be intimidating. The easy part of the process is to make this decision. The challenging but thrilling part is sorting out the details and planning for the big move. It can be a logical nightmare. To help, here are tips to make a smoother move.

1.  Research Your New State

Moving to a new state can sometimes feel like moving to a new country. Before deciding to move out of Illinois, take some time to do as much research on the new state you are moving to as you can.

For example:

• Find good schools, if you have children, and figure out the best area to search for a new home.

• Find out how much taxes you are going to pay in the new state.

• Learn how cold it gets in the winter and how hot it gets in the summer.

• The idea of leaving Illinois and moving to a new home might seem exciting, but you need to do enough research to know you're making the right move.

2.  Search for a Home

Once you finally decided to move to a new state, start looking for a new home. Contact me and I will be happy to refer you to a top Realtor in your new state. Do not plan to move until you have secured a new place to live.

3.  Update Your Accounts

Transfer your utilities and home services before moving to your new home. Make sure the water's running, the electricity is on, and the internet is working when you move into your new home.

4.  Use the Move as an Excuse to Purge

Get rid of all the items you don't need to take with you. Sell, donate, or trash. Remember, the more you move, the more you pay. Don't bring things you do not need.

5.  Always Pack Properly

After purging, pack everything you are planning to take to your new home. Wrap your china and breakables up nicely and securely. Avoid putting too many items in one box. Always label all of the boxes. You never know when you'll have to try and find something quickly during your move.

6.  Hire a Reliable Moving Company

Do your research on moving companies that specialize in long-distance moves. Get 3 quotes and use the best company available. If you are planning to downsize, check out some storage facilities near your new destination.

7.  Forward Your Mail

Contact your local post office and have them forward mail to your new address immediately. This can be done in person or online. It will prevent you from missing anything important in the mail. And of course, before you leave town, let your friends and family know you are moving.

8.  Obtain a New Driver's License When You Arrive

Avoid potential legal troubles by obtaining a new driver's license and license plates. You don't have to do this as soon as you cross the border. Just do it as soon as you are settled.

9.  Take Time to Explore Your New Surroundings

Make an effort to make the most of your move. Explore and see everything your new area has to offer. This will help you adjust to your new surroundings and make new memories right away.
